Essex

Essex is a town in Chittenden County, Vermont, United States. The former village of Essex Junction was located within the town and is home to the state of Vermont’s busiest Amtrak station and largest private employer, GlobalFoundries. Vermont Route 289 crosses the town from east to west.

The town of Essex was originally chartered in 1763 by Benning Wentworth, the then-governor of New Hampshire. The charter included what is now the Village of Essex Junction. The town was named for a town in England.

Throughout its history, Essex has been an important agricultural community. In the early 19th century, it was known for its horse breeding farm, which supplied many of the horses used in the War of 1812.
